The Completely Responsible Doings in an Ancient City... ok Chinatown, NYC

So....on Saturday my dad, sister and I went to NYC. After the Natural History Museum, we went to lunch in Chinatown--the ultimate bootlegging capital of the world. My dad met up with some of his friends and my sister and I went up and down on the famous Canal St.

So let me tell you a little something about Chinatown:

On EVERY street corner, there are one or two people whispering the magic words to women "Prada, Coach, Dior, Louis Vuitton." Then they thrust their catalog paper full of images of designer purses in your face. You're supposed to follow them to their semi-secret area (usually down iron stairs leading underground into a sweat shop) where you can nab a Coach for $20 with some bargaining.

My sister and I didn't believe it was real. It sounded like something out of a horror movie. But lo and behold, there on the corner of Canal and Broadway, was a tiny old grandma-looking Asian woman saying, "You like Chanel? Dior? I got what you need." Oh really? I thought. "Do you have a Louis Vuitton Speedy 30, with reverse monogram print in leather vintage style?" She stared around, shifty eyed. Then, from the depths of her bizzare parka she pulled out a Louis Vuitton Speedy 30, with reverse monogram print in leather vintage style. Well dang, I thought. She really did have "what I need." You expect these grandmas to give you a cookie or something, not solicit their bootlegged goods on an very unsuspecting public.

Later, we followed (smartly) another woman who was using her cell as a walkie talkie. She handed us off to a twenty-something man who then led us down an alley. My sister and I were a bit uneasy here, but the man was like, "No problem! No problem! I got what you need." Ten seconds later we were sitting in a heavily tinted mini van full of illegal, but gorgeous purses. But my sis and I chickened out and so we left the van as soon as possible. LOL. It was definitely something though!

Hasta la vista....

So here's a small story that just happened to me....

I JUST got back to the apartment about 30 seconds ago. My dad took his entire lab to a bar where we had dinner and beer and Mango Lavender Mojitos and all that good stuff. Well, after my sister parks the car, she, my dad and I start walking to the apartment. Suddenly this woman comes out and says "Hi!" really enthusiastically. Apparently she knows my dad, and she starts talking to us, telling her how beautiful my sister and I are, how gorgeous our hair is...blah blah. She had that look that makes you feel that she's not all there...know what I mean? My sister and I are nodding politely at this overly talkative/happy woman...until...

She says "My husband just died. He was murdered."

OMG?

No, it get's better.

She continues: "Yeah, murdered by his own brother, he was a gambler."

My sister and I are stunned. Little did we know it gets worse...

"He killed our dogs too."

At this point, both me and my sister gasped. What blasphemy! Hand out the death penalty! It really surprised me how composed this woman was. She explained that she had gone into shock when she heard the news of her husband's death, and all the shit she had to go through at the hospital.

So I guess ultimately...even though she didn't seem "all there," I had to appreciate how amazing it was that she could still smile and laugh, because I'm pretty damn sure I wouldn't be like that if that was me.

Until next time..

Adi

Ah-Ha! =D

Okay...so I've never blogged before, but I guess this is kinda like a MySpace bulletin in paragraph format so here goes!

Right now I'm stuck in HellHole, CT, otherwise known as New Haven. Let me just tell you right now that a "haven" is usually a place of contentment and well being. Well, fuck that. Tucson is where it's at homies!

This is my dad's apartment complex...don't let the peaceful atmosphere and green grass fool you, it still sucks being here!

So I guess I'll start my blog off with an interesting story. Just kidding. Absolutely nothing interesting has gone on in the past few days, other than the fact that Chris, one of my dad's lab workers, asked me to wash 200 slides (those little glass things you look under a microscope with for you non-science nerds). So I put on Voldemort's cloak (lab coat) and Harry's glasses (goggles) and latex (not trojan, gloves). So here I am, being the innocent, hard working girl that I am all decked out in lab shit, when Chris says,

"Just kidding, I really don't have any slides for you."
Asshole. It reminds me of something I would to do Megan, the bestie who I MISS!

Okay, until next time ppl. Tomorrow I'm going to NYC, so something tragic and/or exciting is bound to happen.

Peace!
